AndalayBay
Do you have eczema? My husband has it so bad, he's on some nasty drugs. We've thought about moving to warmer climes sometimes.
Sigurð Stormhand
I don't know that's it's eczema - I don't sweat much, my skin is generally dry in a fairly normal way but in the Winter that translates to issues with my hands.

prettyfly
A Song of Ice and Fire isn't really very good - it's like REALLY bad WOT. What!? ASoIaF is NOTHING like WOT. WOT, (like LotR) is a mythos. ASoIaF is a history. There's not much magic, no creation story or myths that the narrative driven by; it is about feudalism and civil war (well, granted, there is the imminent invasion of the Others and the whole Azor Ahai thing and a good deal of prophecy, but that's all still really murky and the focus remains on politics and moreover, as we're never going to meet the Great Other, there is hardly any comparison to, say, the Dark One). Really, do you have any idea of what ASoIaF is about? I can't understand why someone would compare it to WOT.

I personally lost interest after the first five books when I realised that Martin could only surprise me by being unbelievably obvious. It has about as much to do with Feudalism as snuff porn has to do with a healthy sexual relationship. The series has been building towards the Invasion of the Others since book one and Signs and Portants, and Mysticism, are key plot points. Here's one tip for you. The Nightswatch who swore by the Seven will all fall -only those who swear by the Wierwoods are protected against the Magic of the Others. This is why "Coldhands" did not become like the other Whytes. What have you been reading.

This is why "Coldhands" did not become like the other Whytes. So by that logic all 250 men who fell and then rose on the Fist of the First Men must've sworn to the Seven right, or does that sound slightly unlikely to you? Because it sounds pretty much impossible to me. And as for Coldhands, we have no fucking idea who or what he is (other than dead), but the evidence for him being protected from becoming a wight due to swearing to the weirwoods, is, uh, non existant. I think you'll find that his origins are much more likely to lie with Bloodraven I think we've both been reading the same book but it seems you misread that part of it. I personally lost interest after the first five books when I realised that Martin could only surprise me by being unbelievably obvious. It has about as much to do with Feudalism as snuff porn has to do with a healthy sexual relationship. What, so Dany going insane and turning into the badguy was obvious? Stannis surviving and turning out to be the saviour/avenger of the Starks (suck it Freys) was really obvious? I suppose R+L=J is extremely obvious to you as well then. I'll grant you this; there is a parallel between the whole Dark One returning/Dragon being reborn and The Others returning/Azor Ahai being reborn. (its Jon, btw, and don't tell me that it was obvious) But that's standard trope, and aSoIaF approaches the whole thing in a different manner. Most of the story is about a civil war in a feudal realm (the 'game of thrones'); we don't hear about Azor Ahai until the second novel and at that point it seems like it could well be a hoax. And since none of the major prophecies have been fulfilled yet, its a bit premature to dub anything obvious. That, and Stannis is the dictionary definition of badass. Coldhands is Ned's Brother - like the other Starks he worships the Wierwoods. It's entirely believable that all 250 men swore to the Seven. The vast majority of the Nights's Watch do. Consider - none of the upper ranks in the first book worship the Old Gods. What, so Dany going insane and turning into the badguy was obvious? Stannis surviving and turning out to be the saviour/avenger of the Starks (suck it Freys) was really obvious? I suppose R+L=J is extremely obvious to you as well then. Sorry - at what point did Dany go insane? If she did that *qould* be obvious, actually she's been insane since at least book two, because all Targaryon's go insane eventually. Stannis is the savior of no one - and he is wreathed in the blackest of shadows, so much so that he doesn't cast one himself. That Lyanna and Rheagar got Jon *was* obvious from Ned's memories - and it becomes ever more obvious as people wax lyrical about how honourable Ned is. Here are the key points - Jon is a Stark - Ned would not have cheated on his wife. - When Ned finds Lyanna she's in a room scented with Rose Water. That's historically been used at birthings to calm the mother and cover the frankly awful smell. - Rhaegar would not have raped Lyanna. I was sure Jon was Rhaegar's get by at least book 3. Admittedly, I did miss that Renly was Gay, until Stannis confronted him with it shortly before his death.
Vorians
Oh great, they've reverted to spoiler-speak again. Good thing I don't want to read what they're saying, as work PC just forgot how spoiler script works so the Show button doesn't Show stuff. Ok, you're the second person to report that. Is it only your work PC? Perhaps you could post in the Feedback forum. Someone already started a thread about the same issue. I asked them if they still had the problem after the board upgrade and they didn't reply. Hey Arty, we've got to start a spoiler convo just to be annoying. Arthmoor
Given that it's his work PC, it's reasonable to assume his IT environment is filtering the javascript necessary to operate the spoiler box, along with other stuff that may not be as obvious. AndalayBay
Yeah, that's probably what it is. As I said, we only had one other report, so they probably didn't have JS enabled.

Leaf, on Coldhands. “No. They killed him long ago..." Leaf could be lying, and I'd like Benjen to be Coldhands, but I think its unlikely (otho, if he turns out to be the Nights King, with distinctive Stark features that would be very cliche). Also, Coldhands is a wight; that's why he can't enter the cave (granted, he is definitely distinct from normal wights as well). Sorry - at what point did Dany go insane? If she did that *qould* be obvious, actually she's been insane since at least book two, because all Targaryon's go insane eventually. Admittedly, I did miss that Renly was Gay, until Stannis confronted him with it shortly before his death. -Dany->when she started massacring people in Slaver's Bay. And not all Targaryans go insane, although its true that many Targaryans start off good and lose it as they get older, like Aerys. -Stannis is justice. How many Kings do you think would castrate their own men for raping captured enemy women? I am resigned to the fact that he is doomed, but aside from some of Melisandre's excesses (namely burning some guys while he was off at Blackwater), there's not much you can hold against him. Renly got what was coming for him. He stopped the wildlings from defeating the NW and hes about to deal with the Boltons and Freys in a one two stroke. -I'll grant you that if you pay close attention R+L=J is apparent, but the evidence is entirely anecdotal. EDIT2 At home now. For some reason adding the CODE box removed the line breaks that adding it was supposed to ensure would be displayed. I don't like CODE on this forum, it always seems to do stupid things. CODE contents fixed. Edited January 23, 2013 by Vorians
