Jon
This is not remotely the place for help with this. Posing it as a question asking if something is wrong with NifSkope doesn't make it acceptable either. How much a vertex moves in the wind is done by their vertex alphas, the exact same as Skyrim. Instead of seeking further help here, please look into how one weights vertex alphas for tree animations, or create a thread somewhere. Edit: And, btw, it's not possible for NifSkope not to show something. It loads the data generically via data definitions it's been given for the NIF version in question. If those data definitions are not correct, the blocks will not match the size listed in the header and the program will error.
Kesta
Either for Jon (for a spell -> sanitize) or Zilav (for nifchecker): For Skyrim meshes (untested on others), the three last values of the array known in nifskope as "Unkown 6 Shorts" in a bhkRigidBody need to be zero (or have some very specific values) or the object will crash (but not bandicoot) the game/CK. At least for a "BSFadeNode"-based object. Typically those values are wrong when the nif have been freshly exported from max (could be that the plugin cannot actually export BSFadeNode ?) Actually, just need some game-specific spell to set the "unkown 6 short" array values under bhkRigidBody to those from the game chosen. Root problem is the max exporter fail to set those values to the proper one for skyrim (it use Oblivion's values, which crash the game). More details (with melodramatic context) on this topic. MadCat221
I use existing BGS-authored NIFs similar to what I'm creating to splice into whenever possible, to ensure all that stuff is properly formatted already.
Jon
@Kesta That's really something that should be fixed at the export stage. As Hana said in that thread it seems like an exporter problem. I never had the issue using NifUtilsSuite. Since that entire block is questionable after exporting, you may also want to do what MadCat suggests and try Copy / Paste Over using a similar vanilla block. The issue is how do you differentiate between non-zero and incorrect values vs non-zero and correct values. As you say the vanilla blocks can have non-zero values there that do not crash the game. Even with zilav's tool, there'd be way too many false positives. (Edit: FYI I was responding to the version of your post before your recent edit) --- @MadCat ... I've looked into the link issue and it's not related to my new caching systems or the speedups to link management. There was another issue with the viewport slowing down block/branch deletes, specifically when deleting a block it updates all the links, and this update causes the meshes to recompile. I basically rate limit the mesh recompiling when the links update to speed up branch deletes. However when *setting* links, there is another viewport function that ends up getting called before the link update function because of my rate limiting. So like I said in a previous post it is basically an "out of sync" issue. There isn't really much point in having that error message at all, but instead of just removing it I'll try to fix the viewport updating so that it doesn't get out of sync for the couple frames. TrickyVein
I've never been able to figure out just what is going on when one enters rotation values manually using edit → transform for a mesh, like shown in this video: Using Euler YPR values, entering +90º and +180º for something works just fine, but if one enters a negative value for one axis, it completely throws off trying to enter values for any other axis, like shown. Instead of entering +180º like I was able to when I used the previous values, I end up with... -81? I'm not saying this is a problem with NifSkope, necessarily but it is really confusing and makes small edits like this in the render window kind of bothersome if one has to end up copying and pasting numerical values into these fields instead of being able to enter values manually. Am I being dumb here, or would it be worthwhile to look at adjusting how the edit/transform window works? It's nice being able to view changes in real-time, which is where most of its usefulness comes from, but it seems like adjusting rotation values in real-time makes it difficult to use sometimes when one is jumping between positive and negative rotation values for a selected object. Jon
Do you notice the parentheses around the YPR values in the Block Details? This is signifying that the rotation can't be represented by Euler Angles, probably due to gimbal lock and maybe some other discontinuities (I haven't really looked into it before). Any changes you make to the values while it's showing the parentheses are probably unpredictable, or when passing by these discontinuities. The actual storage for the rotation is a 3x3 matrix and there are two abstractions for user input, Euler and Axis Angle, and the Euler method is doing everything it can afaik. I don't really recommend using the Edit Transform window at all. If you want to input values more reliably, go to the rotation row and click the Euler button to switch to Axis Angle mode and input the values there. If you have exact rotations you want you can also do Transform > Copy from the source and Transform > Paste on the destination. You may need to change the position values back if you don't want them. Aside from Euler and Axis Angle, I would like 3D transform gizmos, but honestly I would rewrite the renderer before doing this, so it's a ways off. TrickyVein
Thanks for the reply. I've never looked at controlling rotation or position from inputting values into block details before for meshes - looks like it doesn't update while the field is being edited, which is pretty much what I was looking for. MadCat221
Would it be possible to have a Transform > Apply effect for BHKRigidBodyT blocks? NifUtils chunk utilities don't take the positional values (and probably rotational too) into account when extracting or merging chunks into a NIF, and I don't think anyone's actively developing that anymore... dAb
This is with 2.0.0 pre-alpha 5 and it's consistent every time I run it. Jon
@dAb https://github.com/niftools/nifskope/issues/97 Basically, it's probably on integrated graphics and there's nothing you can do other than delete the first file mentioned. The other errors I've already fixed in the pre-pre-dev build in this post: http://www.afkmods.com/index.php?/topic/4136-nifskope-20-dev/?p=161688
dAb
Ok thanks, I confirm my crappy work PC runs on Intel integrated graphics. TrickyVein
This is odd. I'm using the alpha 5 version. When I go to copy an NiControllerSequence, I'm getting an error that the parent to a BSEffectShader...Controller is unnamed, which is precisely how a BSEffectShader should be configured: leaving the Name field in its block details blank. It's not that the controller which is referenced in the NiControllerSequence's Controlled Blocks doesn't have a parent linked in the Target field, it does. The same error is generated whether the parent BSEffectShader is linked or not, or named, or not. If I could take a screenshot I would but I'm using a cruddy mac keyboard until my new one arrives. Edit: after some more fiddling, it seems that literally any BSEffect... or BSLighting...Controller which is a controlled block in a sequence is preventing me from copying that sequence. I unlinked every controller in every controlled block in the sequence that was of the aforementioned type and was able to copy it and paste it successfully. This, needing to unlink controllers from blocks has never happened or been required using previous versions of NifSkope. So I can't really say what's going on. Also what may be related to this: alpha 5 version has been assigning string names to nodes which I've added into a .nif and want to intentionally leave unnamed (leave their Name field blank). On saving and reopening, it seems like random strings are assigned to some things, which creates conflicts.
Jon
Also what may be related to this: alpha 5 version has been assigning string names to nodes which I've added into a .nif and want to intentionally leave unnamed (leave their Name field blank). On saving and reopening, it seems like random strings are assigned to some things, which creates conflicts. I can't duplicate using the last pre-pre-alpha in this thread or later builds. Your use case isn't well defined enough. Someone in IRC told me the same thing and I'm asking for clarifications to repro. He sent files, I copied the same branch from one into the other, doesn't happen for me. End result: Just completely delete your folder, install the new version from the 7z. The ICU DLLs which are no longer needed and I stopped including them a few versions ago. Once he deleted his folder and extracted it stopped, and the only folder difference was the ICU files. So, I don't understand why it would be them, but it would appear to be. Also assure that if you are double-clicking files to open them that the version getting opened is actually in the place you expect. For anyone using the pre-pre-alpha here is a newer build: NifSkope 2.0 2016-08-08 Note: This is compiled using a newer Qt version and your UI will reset a little bit. If you are using the 06-23 build I strongly urge you to upgrade. Please report any issues here.
Arthmoor
Ran a quickie on the new build. "C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Data\meshes\armor\leather\f_arm_heavy_r.nif" - doesn't render at all. AMD loves you too
Jon
So.. it used to not render, then I fixed it, and then it doesn't render anymore? Seems I literally can't do anything without AMD dying on it. I haven't touched the stuff that was causing AMD to die before, and the stuff I added are industry standard functions for diffuse/specular lighting models. The glslangValidator program says nothing is wrong with the files either.
Arthmoor
Well, I dunno, but that leather armor mesh won't render. The gun stock will. I haven't checked anything for Skyrim yet.

sialivi
@Jon I'm having a bit of trouble with a misbehaving ragdoll constraint. The constraints pivot point in nifskope doesn't seem to match the behavior in game; in game it's placed higher. I have no idea if this is a bug in either nifskope or the game, or far more probable, something I've done wrong (I'm not a 3d modeller). Maybe you can spot some obvious mistake. screenshot: http://imgur.com/a/Mo6pv mesh: https://db.tt/TJ1WyXWx If I change the order of the two entities in the constraint the top pivot point seems to match what I'm seeing in game, but that might just be a coincidence: screenshot: http://imgur.com/a/kbfOh
TrickyVein
Thanks for the new build. I'll agree that I'm not entirely sure what's going on with seemingly random strings getting assigned to some nodes that are initially left blank. If it happens again then I'll try and document better what's happening. Also liking some of the UI changes: block details are more compact, less needing to scroll. Jon
Well it shouldn't happen again so long as you make sure you have none of the extra DLLs next to the exe. It resolved the other person's issues. The default UI has actually been that way for a while, but the UI doesn't get reset until I compile with a newer version of Qt. After I hid all the unnecessary columns by default there was zero point in having the block details in the bottom dock area (example: https://i.imgur.com/QrVnog2.png). The column widths do get reset too and I never really messed with their default widths so they are too narrow to start out with. You can also widen the left dock area by grabbing the edge between the viewport and the block list. @sialivi .. I believe ttl269 changed a lot about constraints in nif.xml which broke their rendering in NifSkope. Unfortunately I don't really have experience with those blocks so I don't know what to fix. TrickyVein
I prefer having block details underneath of the render view since that's what I'm used to, using NifSkope since 2010, and that's what it's looked like. I've moved the windows around to what they were. But regularly, I'm looking at .nifs that have block lists the size of which are well in excess of what's able to be displayed in the reduced window area, which is now set by default in the newest build version. TrickyVein
In previous versions of NifSkope I've been able to use F2 and F3 (or maybe F3 and F4?) commands to disable/enable viewing the Block List and Block Details windows. Not so much in the latest version. None of these keys does anything. Can anybody else confirm?
Jon
Was intentional. F2 is the system default key to edit a selected field which is standard across most Windows programs and so some people expect F2 to invoke the editor for the selected value. sialivi
Not sure this is considered a bug, but it is at the very least a bit misleading and a possible source of confusion (at least it was for me): If you change the translation of the root node in nifskope, the entire mesh is moved in nifskopes renderer, but this doesn't actually have any effect in-game, at least not in Skyrim. I think it would make sense for nifskope to not perform that translation, and maybe warn the user about this translation not having an effect, so the nifskope rendering and in-game rendering matches better. zilav
I completely don't agree. It is always responsibility of users, and users only, to know what fields actually do when they edit them. The same with xEdit when you change plugins. Root node has translation fields, NifSkope allows you to edit them as any other fields, there should be no difference. Besides it has Apply Translation spell which you can always apply after changing translation/scale.
