About This File

Misery and despair have haunted you all your life. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, you've been arrested and thrown in the dungeons. Your trial was supposed to be weeks ago, only nobody has come for you. It's been so long since seeing daylight you no longer know what month it is anymore. The dungeon is cold, damp, and worse still, you're running out of food. At least you have that leak in the wall for water. It seems as though you've been forgotten, soon to rot away and die. The eight have forsaken you! Or... have they?

Live Another Life provides an alternative means to start the game for those who do not wish to go through the lengthy intro sequence at Helgen. You will be given the opportunity to choose your race and then choose a new life for your character to lead. A wide variety of choices will be available. What you choose will have a lasting impact, so choose carefully or the gods may forsake you again!

Additional support has also been provided to allow you to extend Live Another Life with your own starts.

Requires the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch to be installed first!

If Savlian Shoal is killed and Geraldine is still alive, she will take over administering the profits for the farmhouse start. If they are BOTH killed though, the profits quest will end as usual. (Bug #29448)

I can't get it to work with AE either. I get through race menu, name, start, then it CTDs every time. I disabled all mods and re-added them with no problems until I added this one. I never had this problem with SE. *shrug*

Does anyone have suggestions on how to get this to play nice with AE? 

I did the updates, tried trouble shooting, and eventually disabled all mods. I added them back a little at a time and made sure the game would launch properly. All mods are up-to-date, proper patches are in place, requirements checked and double checked. Everything works fine until I add LAL. As soon as I exit racemenu I get CDT. After 2 days of working on this I am getting frustrated.

Do you have LAL and it's associated patches located at the very bottom of your load order?

it's obviously something you're doing and not the mod's fault, nor Arthmoor's. 

since nov 11, 2021, ive been able to have this mod work absolutely fine. even after purchasing and installing the AE upgrade (which is additional and separate from the nov 11, 2021 update).

SE is the game without the additional AE upgrade. the additional AE upgrade is the inclusion of all that lovely creation club content. if you did not purchase that, then you are using SE.

what you /ought/ to be doing is running the game with absolutely the minimum required for this mod. not even script extender (because that is not required). as far as i know, all that is absolutely required is the latest USSEP.

SO:

clean up your install folder. disable any mods (including shadow and lighting ones like ENB). disable any injectors or other DLLs. no script extender. no texture overrides. nothing. just USSEP and LAL. launch the game with JUST THAT. absolutely nothing else. 

if and only if there are issues remaining then (might even require doing a steam verify/clean install of the directory) will there be any reason to suspect the issue is LAL

and if you only have exclusively USSEP and LAL: there won't be any need for any patches nor any tweaks thru xedit or any smashy bashy tools.

I never said it was his fault. I was looking for advice to get things to play nice after I purchased AE, but thank you for mansplaining it for me.

sorry. this says otherwise. 

and no this isnt mansplaining. 

you obviously are not an expert in the field of modding because otherwise the mod would work. 

i am giving you advice on how to best determine if the issue is with LAL versus AE. which it isnt. 

edit: 

giving basic step by step and first step advice for troubleshooting which fixes most issues is commonplace in any field. 

if i call a tech support for an issue with internet or whatever and they ask me to power cycle it, is that mansplaining? even though ive done that myself 3 times and done everything else i can think of?

no. theyre going through a list of what to do and until it is shown that that doesnt fix it, they cannot proceed.

there is an issue with one of your other mods or settings. something that hasnt been explained in detail. this mod hasnt been updated in a while. arthmoor knows the mod works for its intended purposes (and many more). 

maybe a version of some library is out of date? maybe the race menu is the wrong version? maybe by chance some random loose file is conflicting? 

which mod manager are you using - if any? maybe it's a conflicting script. one script file packaged in an archive that slips the mind.

if you ran the game as i explained and saw that LAL worked fine, then you can go from there.

Omniguous, chill, man. You've been biting everyone's heads off. Take a breath and try to look at your posts objectively. They're coming off as seriously rude. Kalia's just asking for help.

 

Kalia, I had the same problems. While it's not LAL that's doing it, I've found that it can be a little fiddly with AE. Here are the steps that I took to get it to work:

Go into steam and have it check for corrupted files. It will reinstall anything that looks hinky.

If you haven't already, download LOOT and SSEdit. I use Vortex, so I can only tell you how to do this through there.

Set up whatever mods you'd like to use. Run LOOT separate from Vortex. (It's got LOOT embedded, but I find it easier to use when I can see all the notes.)

Follow LOOT's suggestions: clean dirty edits with SSEdit, pick up any missing patches, etc.

Once you've got things at least mostly copacetic, go into Vortex and double click on LAL from the plugins page. Under 'group' set it to 'Late Loaders'.

If you use MCM, don't go in and change your settings until after you've picked your new life. SLEN, in particular, will CDT you every time, otherwise. And I'm sure other things will too.

I'm a very green modder and there are tons of things I've yet to learn, but these steps have worked for me. If you have any other questions, I'm happy to help, but my knowledge base is limited.

I sounds like it might be a Racemenu version mismatch, If you go to Expired's Patreon you can see they've released 5 versions in the past few months trying to do bug fixing with the AE version and  many people are still reporting being unable to use presets. Because I knew AE was sure to cause trouble I completely uninstalled everything for a fresh start (including Skyrim itself), sadly you may actually be in for this ride too; I've currently reinstalled 323 of my mods including LAL and it's working perfectly for me, maybe there's something as simple as a single file that didn't get uninstalled while you were removing the older version (some mod managers have oopsies sometimes). Or maybe there's actually some file in your personal load order that needs to be under LAL, do you use LOOT and SSEEdit to look for conflicts?

Another thing to look into is, if you use MCM, how many mods start loading their settings immediately when you exit creation? I have 21 MCM mods, some which are script heavy can cause crashes after Racemenu simply because the engine gets overwhelmed, perhaps something else that tries to load when Racemenu exits is not playing nicely with LAL. Have you tried disabling your mods but keeping USSEPLAL and Racemenu checked in your manager and go from there? Sometimes really weird incompatibilities happen especially the heavier you mod, I have a mod for Fallout 4 that fixes ONE single bald ghoul's head, and if it's not in the correct spot in my order it makes ALL the shaved/bald haircuts from Commonwealth Cuts float above the heads.

Something to check that I forget about often is SKSE mods/plugins that might be multiple parts and require manual install, maybe some piece or updated file is missing.

I'd say if you disable everything except Racemenu and LAL and there's still an issue with crashing then it sounds like something is fundamentally borked in your Skyrim install, have you tried having Steam rescan the files to make sure that Steam didn't mess up during update? I have 3 games that absolutely need to be completely reinstalled with EVERY update because Steam somehow corrupts the files EVERY time (even happens with Far Cry 6 on Ubisoft launcher, I've had to reinstall it 3 or 4 times because somehow each update corrupts 21GB of files)

When AE was being released I stepped away from Skyrim SE so that mod authors had time to deal with the changes. Bethesda updates always cause modpocalypse. I waited until April to come back. I updated everything and *hoped* things would work. LOL, that never happens. 

In the end I disabled all mods in MO2 and added them back 3 at a time (I always use STEP as a guide for proper order).

Mods that have patches I did one at a time with patches and if they gave me a problem I disabled the patches one by one until I found the culprit.

I had one patch for LUX causing CTD as soon as you hit new game (in SKSE).

And Schlongs of Skyrim for AE needs an update because a newer game update broke it (someone posted about it on Lovers Lab recently).  When using Alternate Start it CTDs as soon as you exit racemenu.

I just get impatient and hope someone else has dealt with it already. Trouble shooting is tedious. 

I am currently running with 526 mods and not having problems: 30 ESMs, 204 ESPs, and 292 ESLs

I understand you tried reenabling a few at a time, and I know how awful it is when you have hundreds (I have 637 in Fallout 4) what I meant with my question about testing was did you fully disable everything else except USSEP, Racemenu, and LAL? including any SKSE optimizers for things like faster load times, improved menu clicking, things like that.

I've been looking at hundreds of bug reports for my favorite mods this past week and there are quite a few things like certain HDT mods and combat overhauls that are not playing nicely with AE. I don't use MO2 but I'm wondering if it has one of those Profile features like Vortex where you can have multiple different mods configured for different users/testing? I ran into some issues with Racemenu myself this week where presets and expressions were not working, the solution for that ended up to be manually copying the SKEE.dll and SKEE.ini from the SKSE\Plugins folder to the SKSE base folder, no clue why.

I hope you don't end up needing to reinstall, although honestly it's what I'd do at this point because I consider LAL an absolute must have in my order since I start new types of playthroughs all the time. I know my posts are long winded but did you have Steam rescan to ensure the game updated properly?

I did get it working. MO2 does have profiles so you can have different configurations. 

I disabled everything except SKSE and my ENB.

If you primarily use Nexus for mods double check any mods that have off site requirements. Many of those have been updated but your Mod manager may only be checking Nexus. Also a lot of modders have moved their stuff elsewhere due to some disagreement with Nexus policies. Many of them have updates on other sites, like here. I hope that was helpful.

Same here actually, I've been troubleshooting for two weeks. Now the last immersion breaking (not Alternate start, spears and their junk tbh) bug is solved but my character is forever trapped in the abandoned prison.

same here, been troubleshooting the past three and a half hours. just started happening today.
Update: it started working, i literally have no idea what i did. i sorted my load order on LOOT, but i had done that many times at that point so idk what was different.

Long story.  It's still up at the Nexus (Arthmoor removed most of his stuff) but it's an older version last updated in 2020.  I believe Arthmoor disliked a policy the Nexus had about not being able to remove one's mods from the Nexus past a certain date, and elected to remove most of his stuff from the Nexus and host it himself.

Could we get a 4.1.6 upload or whatever the last version to not require Anniversary Edition/Special Edition 1.6 creation club content as masters? I understand the Nexus has 4.1.4 from 2020 if that isn't the case. Could always have the caveat of not providing any support for it since it'd be for a previous version of the game.

Not going to happen. Arthmoor only supports the latest build of the game, so 4.1.7 is the only build of Alternate Start that will be offered for download.

i *LOVE* this mod, and have used it extensively, but i'm dealing with a very persistence "approach my child..." bug at the statue of Mara, where she plays the audio clip but the dialogue options never appear. 
Extensive googling, talking to the wise on discord and forums groups, and a week of testing has not helped me find the cause. 
Any insights into what could be causing this? Engine fixes is updated and installed properly, etc.

EDIT: Found the issue! 
Was clashing with LOTD: The Curator's Companion. Why?
Papyrus, while up to date, needed to be uninstalled and re-installed. Now works just fine.

It's still being updated and only supports SSE 1.6.353. The version on Nexus hasn't been updated since late 2020 and only supports SSE 1.5.97. That's it.

Hello

Feature request:
Start as a Windhelm Thane (Hjerim) owner. 

Yes, Blood on the Ice is obviously why it isn't there yet. 

Why: 
Because then people can use this mod as one of the core mods to do even more extreme sports.

Suggestion on how:
"I am a Windhelm thane, returning to my house (Hjerim) after 5 years away". 
Player starts at the gate of Windhelm, is dropped right into "Blood on the Ice" and is called to resolve it to regain use of their home. Once the quest is complete, the Jarl's steward will reconfigure the house into its baseline configuiration through a dialog option, and waiting for the main questline is not necessary. The house becomes available to the player at no purchase cost, but the player has to earn money and purchase all the upgrades. 

Love the mod - one of the most well-made ones out there - would love it even more if it did Windhelm for us die-hards.

When I launch the game with the vanilla launcher, the mod works perfectly. But when I launch the game with SKSE, the game crash at the end of the character creation, before “STARTED: LIVE A NEW LIFE” appears totally.

It’s my fourth uninstall/reinstall Skyrim AE, and nothing works.

It seems that it’s SKSE which crash the game, but I don’t know why.

running the same thing and does work for me, but i am using vortex instead of mo2 i would suggest try using that and see if that makes difference.
