Battle for Windhelm

I'm doing the battle for Windhelm and giving ol' Ulfie his due. I'm running Open Cities and that might be contributing to my issues - I'm really not sure.

 

First, I don't get a chance to hear Tullius' speech to the troops. As soon as I run along the bridge just in front of the stables, the quest updates saying that I've listened to the General's speech. Then all the soldiers spawn way ahead of me and they start entering the city. Once I enter the city, I don't see Tullius anywhere, but that might be normal, I'm not sure. I start hacking my way through Stormcloaks until I reach the palace. Then I enter the palace and Tullius and Rikke spawn in front of me. Now the second problem I have: the battle music never stops. I can't hear any of the speech Tullius gives to Ulfric or his buddy. Even after we've killed Ulfric, the battle music won't stop. I left the city and fast travelled to Whiterun - still the music plays. I entered Breezehome - and the music continues. I tried to sell some stuff at Warmaiden's and I noticed the prices were all out of whack. I checked my Papyrus logs and suddenly there were a whole bunch of errors from Economics of Skyrim. Those only appear when I enter Whiterun after this battle, with the music stuck on.

 

So there seems to be something out of whack with this entire sequence that seems to cause more errors later. Any ideas? If this is nothing to do with the USKP, then we can move this thread elsewhere.

FWIW, the whole "music not stopping" thing happens when the True High King Ulfric sacks Solitude as well. Equal opportunity annoyance, I guess.

We can leave the thread here for now until it's determined where it actually goes.

 

That bug sounds like something that others have reported in the vanilla game though. I swear I've seen posts about it on the support forums for people who aren't even using mods. One of those freak things.

 

Did you try reloading a prior save and approaching again?

Several times. I had to find the spot near Windhelm that I could fast travel to without getting the quest update right away. Once I found it, I fast travelled to the area outside Windhelm several times to try to get the battle to work right. Would you like Papyrus logs?

This time I went back and tried to clear out more of the Stormcloaks before proceeding. It was a little better. The battle music was the slightly quieter version, which stops periodically. But it continued to start up again. At least I heard more of the discussion. The quest still updated before I actually heard Tullius' address to the troops though.

 

Is there anyway I can get the damned battle music to stop?

Jesus. A lot going on in that list. Some legit stuff as far as I can see in the vanilla game too.

This block broke because the vanilla CWFortSiegeCapital has broken properties defined for the two sounds it tried to start.

It looks like this is such a common problem that the UESP has a fix:

I'll try that and see if peaceful quiet returns. I'm not sure about bartering in Whiterun though - we'll see.

This time I fast travelled to the farms outside of Whiterun and then rode into the city. Everything seems fine and I can barter normally. I used the console command to stop the music and all is blissful silence.

I think I do and I wonder what exactly does the alias TriggerPhase5A do with the CWFortSiegeCapital (0087C21) quest except to trigger something in that quest.  Is it a scripted event or is it a journal update via a script?

It's a triggered event. That's an alias for one of the many trigger boxes the CW material has scattered everywhere. So it shouldn't have complained since it's only active when the quest it talks about is running.

Windhelm is seriously screwed up after the battle. The fires are still raging, some of them in mid-air. And the new Jarl hasn't shown up. The debris has been removed from around the palace, but not outside. And the Windhelm map marker is gone. Lastly there's an Imperial soldier who's stuck outside on the bridge with his weapon drawn and ready to charge into the city. Once again, I'm not sure if these are base issues or because of Open Cities.

It's a triggered event. That's an alias for one of the many trigger boxes the CW material has scattered everywhere. So it shouldn't have complained since it's only active when the quest it talks about is running.

If you want to trigger something then that thing allow you to get triggered right, but if the trigger box isn't configured correctly what will happen or not happen if something along the way doesn't have what it's suppose to have in the first place.

 

It could be almost anything a journal update or the player needs to be in certain spot etc, so anything a trigger box needs to have or not have is essential to make an alias work properly.  Well it's obvious to me that something is wrong.

Because it's an alias, the script that works with it doesn't even exist until the quest holding the alias is running. That's why this makes no sense, because the quest IS running. In fact, it couldn't have thrown the error any other way.

 

So what we have here is a paradox.

Your explanation is exactly my point.  Something is dead wrong that's for sure but the question is...  What's wrong?
