Being interested in the lore of the Elder Scrolls series of games, it really surprised me to see that this forum was still empty after all those years. My interest is particular fixed on the various settlements and regions present in various games and literature. Anyone who has played Arena knows various city-states, towns and villages existed, and various mod authors have revived settlements, either destroyed or not. I have always wondered if the devs of Skyrim might have placed some remnants of these lost settlements in the last TES game, Skyrim. I have purposely left out The Elder Scrolls Online and the books of Greg Keyes (The Infernal City and Lord of Souls), although it has been included in TES lore. I also will not comment on villages built by mod authors for Skyrim, although one village stood out: Laintar Dale, located east of Windhelm while originally located halfway between Windhelm and Labyrinthian. Arena's city states: Dawnstar, Falcrenth (Falcreath), Riften (Rifton), Snowhawk, Solitude, Whiterun, Windhelm and Winterhold Arena's towns: Amol, Dragon Bridge, Granitehall, Karthwasten Hall, Oakwood, Stonehills, Sunguard and Vernim Wood Arena's villages: Amber Guard, Blackmoor, Dragon Wood, Dunpar Wall, Dunstad Grove, Greenwall, Helarchen Creek, Lainalten, Laintar Dale, Markarth Side, Neugrad Watch, Nimalten City, North Keep, Pargran Village, Reich Corigate and Riverwood Arena (other): Fortress of Ice Settlements mentioned in "Holdings of Jarl Gjalund" (unknown era and year): Bromjunaar (Labyrinthian), Granite Hill (region around Vuljotnar's mound), H'roldan (Old Hroldan), Hilgrund's Steading (Ivarstead), Korvanjund, Rorik's Steading (Rorikstead) and Volunruud Other settlements and regions mentioned in TES literature: Aalto (Alto), Bardmont, Cascabel, Dunbarrow, Olenveld Many of those settlements and regions still exist in the latest game, although maybe not at the same locations as they may have been in Arena. In my opinion in the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages a few mistakes are made when comparing the Arena map with the Skyrim map: Arena: Amol -> Skyrim: Fort Amol (west of Windhelm instead of southwest) Arena: Dunstad Grove -> Skyrim: Fort Dunstad (southwest of Stonehills, near Morthal?) Arena: Greenwall -> Skyrim: Fort Greenwall (west of Riften, east of Sunguard, instead of north) Arena: Karthwasten Hall -> Skyrim: Karthwasten (far northeast of Markarth Side) Arena: Markarth Side -> Skyrim: Markarth (far southwest of Karthwasten Hall) Arena: Snowhawk -> Skyrim: Fort Snowhawk (south of Dragon Bridge instead of east) Arena: Sunguard -> Skyrim: Fort Sungard (west of Riften) Some of the locations of settlements and regions could be determined by descriptions in literature or conversations in Skyrim: Aalto (Alto) - the volcanic area in Eastmarch (jazbay grape vinyard) Bardmont - south of Dawnstar, where the Akaviri potentate issued martial law Dragon Wood - between Kynesgrove and Sohlaknir's mound (Uriel sisters) Cascabel - apple orchard between Solitude and Jehanna in High Rock Dunbarrow - near the shores of Skyrim, probably west of Solitude Olenveld - island north of Winterhold I'm interested in your comments and ideas! In the next image I have positioned all lost city-states, towns, villages or settlements and regions described above, according to the original map and my personal opinion. I have also added all the passes from Skyrim to High Rock, Hammerfell, Cyrodiil and Morrowind. Passes: Solitude >> Jehanna (High Rock), Karthwasten Hall >> Dragonstar/Dragon Gate (Hammerfell), Falkreath >> Elinhir (Hammerfell), Riverwood >> Bruma (Cyrodiil), Riften >> Cheydinhal (Cyrodiil), Riften >> Silgrad Tower (Morrowind), Windhelm >> Blacklight (Morrowind)
