Due to some necessary security infrastructure updates on Linode's equipment, our site will be offline on March 7 @ 2pm PST. The outage is scheduled to last for 2 hours, but could be less. That's in 3 days folks, so don't be surprised when it happens. Details here if you want to read up on it: http://status.linode.com/incidents/2dyvn29ds5mz

Earlier today, around 2:30pm PDT, Linode informed me of a hardware issue on the server that runs our node. They were required to take us offline for approximately 20 minutes in order to effect repairs to the software that controls their RAID array. The node rebooted itself when they were done and everything seems to be in order. Unfortunately due to having no A/C in my room I was unaware of this issue until the time of this post, or I would have mentioned it sooner. I hate summer.

Linode is at it again. With their recent revamp of services, the plan AFK Mods is on is eligible for a free upgrade. Details of what they're up to can be found on the Linode Blog. The tl;dr version for us: We're getting an extra 1GB of RAM and an additional 1000 GB (1 TB) of monthly transfer quota. Plus a processor upgrade to a much newer version than we had before. Oh - and everything is going to move to blazing fast SSDs for storage. Since this will require downtime I'm going to plan to do this on Saturday, April 19, 2014 sometime around 1pm or so. Yes, I know that's kind of an odd time to do this sort of thing, but I'd rather not execute an upgrade like this in the middle of the night after being up all day. Linode currently projects the upgrade would take ~45 minutes, so let's just be realistic and call it 2-4 hours. In addition to that, while the downtime window is in effect, I'm going to be upgrading the server's operating system to the next major version. This will include a number of optimizations and security fixes that generally accompany such things, as well as updated versions of Apache, PHP, and MySQL - the core of what drives the website. I'll reply here an hour before the downtime window starts, and then again when the all clear is sounded. Oh, and if anyone is seriously looking for a good VPS/Cloud hosting service, you can't beat Linode.

Just a quick note to anyone who might have been trying to reach the site in the last couple of hours. We're back Weekly site maintenance tasks chewed us alive for a bit, and then Linode announced a free upgrade. So since things are usually dead as a doornail here late at night I figured I'd go ahead and take advantage of it. We now have twice the RAM as before for the same price. This, combined with their recent upgrade to bandwidth quotas and CPU hardware, means we're now running on a much nicer setup that hasn't cost us a single penny more than when we signed up. If only they'd also tossed in some free disk space with that, but hey If you're ever in the market for a good VPS host, Linode.com is the way to go.
