About This File

                       BOSS for Oblivion

Setting the right load order for your mods is a crucial step to enjoying a stable modded game.
Better Oblivion Sorting Software...aka BOSS, is designed to assist mod users in avoiding mod
conflicts, by providing automated load order sorting that's simple to use and fully customizable.
While sorting, BOSS checks for load order errors and notifies you of any issues that it detects.

BOSS also provides thousands of plugin specific messages. Including usage notes, Bash Tag
suggestions, requirements, incompatibilities, bug warnings, and installation mistake notices.

BOSS utilizes a Masterlist text file to sort plugins into the correct order. Although it recognizes
tens of thousands of plugins, new mods are constantly being created and released every day.
This means the Masterlist requires frequent updates. We depend on mod user submissions in
order to keep pace with the modding community.

Program Requirements

In order for the Masterlist to be of any use, you will need to have the latest version (2.3.2) of
BOSS which can be found on the Website. The program can be installed manually anywhere
on your PC, and then run from that location. It doesn't need to be in the Oblivion directories.
Ex: I keep it in a desktop folder labeled "Modding Tools" with all the other modding utilities.

Updating The Masterlist

Find the most recent version of the Masterlist in the files section. Once you've downloaded and
unzipped the file, you just need to copy/paste it in the correct location. See the screenshots for
a visual reference on how to do this.

Start by finding the "BOSS 2.3.2" folder on your PC. Installing it on the desktop makes that easy.
Navigate inwards to the "Oblivion" folder. Copy/paste the "masterlist.txt" into the Oblivion folder.
Allow it to overwrite if asked to do so.

Ex: C:/Users/*yourusername*/Desktop/BOSS2.3.2/Bin/Release-64/Oblivion

GUI Basic Functions

To run the program, activate the "Boss_GUI.exe". Do this by navigating to the folder location and
double clicking (Boss2.3.2/bin/Release-64). Alternately you can create a desktop shortcut.

The most basic function is sorting plugins in the load order. To do this open the GUI and check
the circle next to "Sort Plugins". Click "Run Boss".

Boss can also generate a text log after sorting plugins. This will give you specific information for
the plugins loaded. Such as Bash Tag suggestions, mod conflicts, warnings for obsolete files,
and other things. To get this information check the box "Show Boss Log on Completion". Then
run Boss as you normally would.

The Masterlist can be updated directly through the GUI also. Check the box "Update Masterlist"
and run Boss. This will grab the most recent copy from the online repository. However, at this time
I haven't updated the online repository in quite a while. For now use the Masterlist from this page.

Submitting Unrecognized Plugins

1. Simply leave a post in the comments section here and list at least the basic info. Your plugin(s) will
then be added to the Masterlist with the next update. Alternately, you can submit plugins using the
BOSS GUI, which sends the info to my Github account.

2. Include the full .esm/.esp file name. Proper spelling, spacing, punctuation matter. If you misspell,
the plugin will not be recognized.

3. Optional: Include a brief description of what the plugin does. Knowing this can make a difference in
    determining where to place it.

4. Optional: Include load order suggestions. If you already use the mod, and know where it works in your
load order, that just might work for everyone else as well.

Credits

Full credit for BOSS goes to the original development team. I take no credit only for updating a list that was
already very well developed.

The file for DL is a freshly updated Masterlist. I hadn't updated on the Nexus page for quite some time. Combed through all of the submitted comments over there and included everything I could find. For all intents and purposes it is now up to date. Until more submissions roll in.

Oh btw. Please forgive the images not being in order lol. Apparently there is no way to control that.

Everytime I run boss, it opens a window that the masterlist is being updated then quickly disappears without actually sorting the load order.

Critical Error: ".\oblivion\masterlist.txt" cannot be found! (this is the error I have in the log which is strange. its not my first time using BOSS but reinstalling oblivion aftermany yuears) Any help would be appreciated.

No expert here, I just maintain the masterlist and don't support the program. But i'll try to assist. The error is telling you that there is no masterlist to be found. Meaning there isn't one located in the Oblivion folder the program reads from. You need to locate that folder (use the screenshots on this page as a reference) and copy/paste the masterlist which can be dowloaded from here into the oblivion folder. Once you've managed that part, on the GUI, uncheck the box which says "Update Masterlist" before running the program. That option tries to download a masterlist from the online repository. If it's still working correctly, whatever is there is years out of date anyway. You want the masterlist from this download site.

Hope that helps.

Usually, it means that the file either can't be acquired (something wrong with the download; GitHub could be down or even a connection issue) or that the folder can't be written to for whatever reason. In the latter case, make sure it's not set to read-only and that proper permissions are set in the access control list.

Ahhhh...there's the expert now. Hiya DS.

P.S. Now you mention it I don't know how well the Github interface is functioning. I'm unable to submit plugins through the GUI atm. But I do see recent submissions on there so it's maybe on my end somewhere.

Hi!

Sorry for disappearing on you for a few years

Anyways! Are you getting any kind of error message when you try to do the merge? I did see you tried to do one ten days ago

I did actually get an error message. But off the top of my no coffee foggy head I can't remember what it said this morning. Something about not being able to automatically merge the pull request and needing to perform manual fixes. It should be noted I'm on a new PC since I last updated the online repository over two years ago. I installed Github Desktop and was operating through that interface. Don't know if that has any bearing on things. I'll try it again after work today and let you know exact details.

Sounds good

That message usually means that the commit you want to merge into the main branch is based off of a different branch point but the diff looked clean so I'm not entirely sure why that message would come up

Thanks for your hard work, I appreciate it.

Thank you for saying so. Although I'm late in getting back to this again. Where does the time fly away to?

Sorry to have left you hanging like that. As usual life pulls in several directions at once. By the time I'm able to sit down and work on mod related stuff, I'm usually focused on finishing whatever was the last active project. Will hit this again very, very soon.

Posted a fresh update for the Masterlist.txt. Added another chunk of plugins from my backlogged Github repository and a bunch of recently created compatibility patches of my own. My Github is down to less than 100 outstanding submissions so this is almost up to date now. Should be able to clear things completely on the next run.

Have you had a chance to tinker with Git any more? And it looked like your commit history missed Sharl's commit updating the Edit links, does that commit show on your end?

No hurry on this, just whenever you get around to it :)

Not really DS. I just did a hassle free update this time directly with Notepad++ and posted it here locally. Have another list of submissions waiting so I'll give that another go soon.

Fresh Masterlist update posted. Added a bunch more mods and patches to the list. Got my Github submissions whittled down to under 50 outstanding now. Almost completely caught up.

FYI: OOO SI was recently updated to fix some bugs. Along with it there's a new replacer for the "MMM - SI esp" to help them work together. But this new esp has to go below OOO SI in the order, which puts it far lower than BOSS had it before (directly after MMM's main esp.) That's because BOSS has OOO SI way down, just above all the BC esps. So I'm wondering, why was OOO SI separated in the order from the rest of the OOO stuff in the 1st place, and do you think it can now be updated to go above all the MMM esps, so that the MMM replacer esp can stay in its natural spot? If not, and it has to stay low with MMM's replacer esp below it, I wonder if that'll mess up MMM.

EDIT: The author says to use BOTH the original MMM SI & his replacer right below it. I assume this would mean moving OOO SI up there above MMM, with the rest of the OOO stuff. I'm giving it a try now.

Most of the "Overhauls" category (MMM, OOO, Frans) was in the Masterlist years before I took over maintaining it. Really can't answer as to why things are where they are. Except in a few rare cases where notes are included in the Masterlist. There was probably a reason for placing it that low way back when it was first done. But none of the people who worked on BOSS back then are around to ask. I would have to take a really close look at this scenario before giving any kind of response. There are several hundred plugins listed in the overhauls category and I honestly don't know for sure how they all interact. Moving anything could potentially have a negative impact on any number of other plugins.

I moved OOO SI up with the rest of the OOO's (directly above all the MMM esps) to accommodate the new MMM-SI replacer esp, and haven't seen any problems yet. It was a tough call only because OOO-SI changes a lot of things, and somebody probably had a good reason for originally placing it low in the order. But then again, OOO on its own changes many things, and the former BOSS guys had that up high in the order, so maybe OOO-SI can survive there too.

Is this the only place to get the materlist?  I mean, is GitHub (what BOSS downloads from) updated as well?

This is the only place to get it right now since I'm the only one who has worked at this for a number of years running. The online repository (Github) is not up to date at the moment. My old PC died quite a while back, and all this sat for a long time while I saved up money to replace it.

When I started up again, Github was being a PITA when I tried to update the online repository. It wouldn't take my submissions and I didn't feel like wasting the little free time I have fighting with it. So I post updates here, manually, for now. Eventually, when my work life is a little less hectic, I'll get that sorted out.

If you need more assistance when you get there, may be a good idea to do it via PM so we don't bog down the comment stream too much :)

I will for sure take you up on that. Probably after the new year though. I'm kind of snowed under til then.
