Egosoft have also released Split Vendetta DLC to go with this update

Dont ask me if its any good yet, I haven't played since the start of the v3 betas back in November, game still does not start for me (there is a simple workaround, just dont play in fullscreen on Optimus setup laptops). They have put my issue as a main priority now.

Will buy Split Vendetta when I know the base game is fixed.

I reckon now is a good time to get into the game (or wait until v3.20 goes public), but there will still be a few years worth of patching to come and another DLC so it depends how patient you are. Egosoft have always operated this way, with each new game in the series you can expect patches up to about three years after release because like Hellogames they are a small team doing an ambitious project, X4 is a bit more ambitious than anything they have produced before. It's one helluva time sink though, you can spend many years playing this game if you are into it, takes a bit of getting into like a really long good book.

 

There will be a live stream discussing development and possibly a few future plans will be hinted at today on Twitch ..

I'm really enjoying 3.30 with the first DLC Split Vendetta, the game is very playable now and in a good state. I have 36 days worth of game time played so far (thats real time hours played), and only just starting to get to the stage economically where I can hope to start building fleets required for some missions, and also starting to beat back the spread of Xenon owned sectors. There are still things to iron out, but Egosoft are putting a lot more work into this evolution of the X series, it feels like there is at least another years worth of refining the game to come.

heh. This is like watching them fix things in the previous game. It's like they declared themselves out of beta when they should have kept it in dev another 2-3 years. That Empyrion game I've been messing with has the same problem. Declared themselves out of Early Access but the game is nowhere near being actually complete and constant updates, some of which break your saves.

Yep, thats how Egosoft always develop, you can expect it to be superb about two to three years after launch. This one is a lot more ambitious than previous X series but already they have got a heck of a lot more done really well.

When they are finished there will be no need for any unofficial patches :P :)

Oh, I don't know about there being no need for an unofficial patch, I seem to recall there being a number of annoying issues that were never fixed in X-Rebirth. With the way this company develops though, producing such a patch would be trying to fire on too many moving targets at once so I'm not surprised one never showed up in the end. The company seems to carry this on for a lot longer than interest in their games survives.

Thats true for the majority of gamers with this series, its only the core dedicated fans that eventually benefit from the looong wait for the finishing development, the rest will move on to something else before that happens. Which is kind of a shame, but its the way the company works. X2, and all iterations of X3 were the same. Rebirth was a bit of an oddball which I bought late stages, but like many other fans of the series to me it just wasn't quite X, its growing cobwebs in my digital library probably never to be revisited, it wouldn't surprise me if that does still have leftover issues because I think Egosoft got the message that although there were some good ideas in there for a future game, it wasn't quite the direction their audience wanted the series to go. Turned out to be good groundwork for X4 though, and the return to the familiar format.
