Skyrim Special Edition CTD problems.

Recommended Posts

I posted this over at the Nexus forums but, I thought this might be a good place to get more info, so, here it my issue:

I have been modding LE for 3-4 years.  I consider myself a competent moder.  Of course, there where mature tools to fix LE by the time I started modding.  I have to say that I am disappointing with the stability of SE!  Or, am I doing something totally  wrong?

My current load order won't allow me to play more than about 10th level before I start CTD'ing to a point where it is unplayable.  Before that level, totally stable!  And there isn't a place, or point, other than my level, where the failure starts.  I can't attribute the failure to any one mod, because it's so random.  Once I reach 10th level, I know the time I have to play is limited.  Soon there will be a crash.

So, I cracked open my load and started looking for conflicts that would cause my CTD.  Currently, I have been trying to play Outlaws and Revolutionaries.   Looks like a great mod.  At first, I would get CTD's when I entered Coldwater Cave.  (I was at 10th level...)  So, I started a new game, went straight to the cave.  No problem.  Went into the cave.  I thought, great, I'll start a new game with this load as my play through.  Completed a few quests, leveled up to get some descent armor and headed to Coldwater cave.  Made to the cage where the main quest releases a prisoner and bang.  CTD!  10th level, CTD I can't get past.  Reloads, trying different way's to get around it all unsuccessful.  Dead play through again.

In Tes5edit, that area had absolutely no conflicts.  Nothing touched that area except Outlaws.

I have SSE fixes loaded, a Cobj smash patch, Bash patch (Tried the separate and together), and even once tried a comparability patch through Tes5Edit. (To the best of my ability)  Nothing seem to help.  Lastly, went through and removed form 44 everywhere I could find it.

If anyone can give me an idea where to start looking.  I would appreciate it.

I would post my Papyrus log but, it is different every time I start getting CTD's.  It is absolutely unhelpful.

This is likely what's causing your issue, because form 44 is for SSE mods and I think the form 44 is also used for Fallout 4 mods.

I suggest that you reinstall those mods you removed the form 44 and never touch that again.

From what he wrote I understand it as the OP moved over to SSE.

Anyways it that CTD location specific? You crash anywhere else or only at that location at level 10?

You might wanna make a reddit thread aswell.

To re-iterate on what Leo said, any mods you use in Skyrim SE should be properly ported. That means esp's need to be Form 44. Any Form 43 esp's are going to make your game unstable, that's a fact. Basically you've done yourself a disservice by changing them.

Properly ported mods also entail conversion of assets, be it meshes/textures/animations. There's an entire thread here on this forum about proper conversions.

That could be one problem. To get back to the point where you mention this mod Outlaws and Revolutionaries. Have you tested a playthrough (clean start from the beginning) without that mod to see if you still start getting CTD's at level 10? That would at least narrow down the problem.

Considering the fact that the crashes appear to be level-dependent, the first thing that comes to mind is a mod-added armor or weapon with a faulty mesh that is distributed through leveled lists and does not appear in the game below level 10.

It might be worth having a look at the leveled list sections of your armor and weapon mods (there shouldn't be too many as there are still only a few modders that go the way of properly integrating their items in the game) and check what they add at level 10.

I sincerely hope you mean you removed form 43 mods and not that you went around changing things manually from 44 to 43, because if you did that, your game is toast.

Not to mention that a number of people have reported CTDs caused by using SSE Fixes rather than it helping resolve them. So you may have 2 things working against you now.

Thanks everyone, I did pay special attention to mods I converted to make sure they are form 43.  However, I was doing a bash patch when I noticed several mods that came with other mods that still have form 44!  I will convert them and retest to see if that is the cause. I don't believe outlaws is the problem because I have played without it and had the same issue.

How would I go about finding what leveled list is added at level 10?  That is an interesting suggestion...

Not sure you're understanding here. All mods used in SSE must be form 44 or you'll risk corrupting your saves over time, along with experiencing random weird errors that won't be easy to pin down.

Do not attempt to downgrade any of them to version 43 because that will wreck the plugins themselves: https://bethesda.net/community/post/492878 (SMKViper is a Bethesda developer)

Why you're having the same issue with the outlaws, regardless what mods you are using, is exactly what Arthmoor and Hana said.

Any mod that has form 44 is what every SSE mods must have, otherwise you'll always have an issue regardless what you do.  Except for not removing form 44 from mods that has form 44 to begin with.

Yes, I saw several posts about form 44.  I have been diligent in insuring mods I convert are moved to form 44.  What I didn't account for is other mod authors conversions.  (I meant to say 43...)  Thanks Arthmoor.  I think this is my problem.  When I get some time, I will convert mods I found not to be form 44 and re-test...
