Searching for CTD reason...

Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to modding and still learning how to get everything to work well but I'm starting to lose hope with my current Problem because I dont know which mod causes it.

As it is the game is running perfectly fine, as long as I dont leave the areas covered in snow. Ive also made it far enough into "green" ares to know that some trees don't seem to load properly. My first thought was to diable SFO but that didn't change anything at all. Same thing with Skyrim HD 2k Textures. Seeing as these two are the latest ones I've installed I'm not sure what else amy cause this all the sudden. Then again I haven't left the snow for quite a while before so I couldn't encounter this problem before.

I'm running Skyrim on Windows 10, 8GB RAM, GTX 980, i5-2500k@3.30GHz

Mods are installed using NMM.

As I said I'm new to modding so if you notice anything that may cause this (or possibly different crashes later on) please let me know how to fix it (and if possible why it is causing crashes so I won't make the same mistake again)

Thanks for your help in advance,

Hello LightHawk, welcome to AFK. :)

When you say 'leave snowy areas' how are you leaving? Are you running around or fast traveling? Is it any time you fast travel no matter where?
Have you run LOOT? Some mods appear to be sorted incorrectly, most noticable are the LAL-Alt Start mods, they should be at the bottom of your load order.

It sounds like a case of overload, running out of memory/vram...

possible heavy culprits;

- 56 38 Verdant - A Skyrim Grass Plugin.esp (doesn't this require ini edits? another possible cause)
- looks like you're running ENB?
- 9  9 0db2SECOND.esm -- what is this mod? what does it do?

Also a lot of script heavy mods, more possible culprits.

Suggestion; start a new character, using any LAL start... run around and see how the game reacts... turn on papyrus logging to see if there's script overload happening (you can also post the log here, it might help). It's going to take a lot of testing to nail down the problem here with that large load order.

If I fast travel I get a CTD right after the loading screen, if i walk it's a matter of time.

Yes, I've run LOOT, I think? I can sort them manually by saying certain mods are to load after others but it sorts them automatically after starting LOOT, right?

Runing out of memory or VRAM shouldn't be possible, the 980 has 4GB of VRAM and I doubt I'm gonna need more than that. (right?)

- I've changed the ini files as described on the page for verdant on the nexuspage, so that should be fine.

- Yes ENB is running

- 0db2SECOND are dragonbreak episodes 1 and 2

If it were the script heavy mods wouldn't my game crash everywhere?

Will do, I'll post a log later on

I agree with Hana.  Have you clean every mod you're using, including the official DLC?  But where is the bashed patch, I don't see it.

A couple of years ago I had an issue with activators and every time I went into the snow region and activated any activator I got an instant CTD, I even got a CTD when talking to Lydia in the Wayward Pass cell near the Arkay shrine.

Are you sure the edits you made in Skyrim.ini are valid?  Also, are you using the latest video driver and I assume you're using Nvidia?  I updated my Nvidia GTX 750 Ti yesterday.

I will try what Hana said as soon as I can find time to do so (I've got exams coming up so I'm spending most of my time at the campus studying). I can tell you though, that I've downloaded Skyrim+DLC from steam so that install should be fine and for all the other mods I've used NMM and followed instructions given in the description (in case there were any).

I have to admit I do not have a bashed patch as I didn't know what that is or that it even existed in the first place. I'll add that asap, however I doubt that's my problem, because the game crashes no matter where I'm traveling, including cities where obviously the guards should have the same equipment as in the cities I can enter. Then again I may have missed something a few minutes ago when I tried to understand what the bashed patch is.

What do I have to do to figure out if I have a similar problem? so far I only got CTD when traveling out of snow regions but never while activating objects/talking to someone.

I've changed exactly what I was supposed to change and nothing else in Skirim.ini.

I haven't used the latest driver as I wanted to skip version 364.47 as it was known to cause problems. Thanks to you I know the 364.51 is out now, which should (supposedly) fix said problems so it's updating right now.

Thanks again for all your help, and as I said I'll add a papyrus log asap.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I've finally found some time.

The graphics drivers are up to date now, the bashed patch still isn't applied (I'll do that soon)

I've started a clean save, using one of the custom races, and used a random LAL start. I went ahead and added the Merta Assassin Armor and the Iceblade of the Monarch to my inventory as well as a travel lantern, activated the tgm command and went of to wander around. After walking from Markarth all the way to the swamp between Soltitude and Morthal killing a few foresworn and clearing out a cave on the way the game crashed. I did not notice any missing textures this time, all trees rendered correctly, which is odd considering that I could reproduce the problem with the missing tree textures on my other save.

Looking into the papyrus log I've noticed that there are counless errors and warnings listed. The entire log is certainly is way too long to post so here is a dropbox link to the file:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/q8hzighorsa3kqm/Papyrus.0.log?dl=0

Just by looking at that log I'm pretty sure I messed up big time somewhere...

An 8mb papyrus log is a tragedy....

There's a lot going on here, but most of it is harmless. The biggest issue may be the LunariRace.esp and the character you created. That's where all the spam is coming from (and possibly why you crashed with script overload).

When you have the time, I'd like you to do another test. Uninstall LunariRace.esp, start another new game with a vanilla race. Run around. Exit the game to desktop. Go back in game on that char and run around some more. Exit. You should now have two logs - papyrus_0.log and papyrus_1.log. I'd like to see both.

One other thing, Sanguines Debauchery seems to be complaining about a lot of missing scripts. Are you sure it's installed correctly?

That's good you got some time, because troubleshooting a game like what you have is gonna to take some time to fix, if you can fix it that is most likely you can't fix it.

If you want to know what a bashed patch is then scrap NMM and start to learn how Wrye Bash works (I know it's for Oblivion, but most features work for Skyrim) since the bashed patch are one of many powerful features that Wrye Bash offers.

Another tool you definitely need is LOOT and using TES5Edit aren't necessary to use, but LOOT will complain about dirty mods and recommend the user to clean those dirty mods including the official DLC with TES5Edit.

It isn't recommended to start a new game or start using a clean save at the same time using a custom race mod, but I think most people want to use LAL when starting a new game for whatever reason.

Ok, this should be interesting now:

The Lunari race is unistalled, I've created a Nord walked around, then decided I want a carriage to Whiterun, and during the loadingscreen the game crashed. Then upon restarting the game it crashed after hitting the continue button. Those two papyrus logs are .0 and .1 logs, I then continued to restart the game a few times until it would let me load my safe file and walked around the area close to Whindhelm instead (note that I spawned on Solstheim and had no trouble fast traveling back from there) which is the .01 log.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6rfqlml5avhze5e/AAAjeY-VvdIddfoGUGLMvx35a?dl=0

I tried checking the installation of Sanguines Debauchery but LoversLab seems to be down, perhaps just bad timing on my part, I'll check again later.

As for the bashed patch I'm kind of having a problem there, namely my Skyrim directory.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim

Is there a way for me to move the game out of the program files folder? I'm using Win10, the build in way to move programs doesn't seem to be working for desktop applications but only for those apps sind win8.

LOOT is installed although I'm planning on getting into TES5Edit I didn't have the chance to yet. Starting to belive I'm having too many hobbies, or at least too many plans... :D

What's the problem with using a clean save with a custom race mod?

Well, normally I would post a link to Steam of how to move installed games, but in this case I think you'll save some time by just scrap everything and install Skyrim plus the necessary tools outside of the UAC protected C:\Program Files(x86) folder.

Perhaps reinstall Steam too and this time outside of the C:\Program Files(x86) folder.  I know you can install Skyrim exactly where you want to have it installed, I have done that and it works.

Why that's a problem?  Because to my knowledge every used method to solve a mod issue by e.g repair a gamesave, clean save etc does not work in Skyrim as it did for both Morrowind and Oblivion due to Papyrus in Skyrim.  That's why.
