Manual Cleaning Skyrim and Skyrim SE Master files

It seems that cleaning the master files damages the game. I've used this method months ago and played with cleaned esm ever since. I had noticed things here and there that I don't remember but weren't quite right. One thing I had noticed really bugged me though: during mq104, just after we give the dragonstone to Farengar, Irileth comes in, tells him about the dragon attacking the western watchtower. After that everyone goes to the Jarl, follows the scene with the guard, etc. Then Irileth leaves Dragonreach and is supposed to give a speech to the guards near the gate of Whiterun. Ever since I played with the cleaned esms, this scene never played; Irileth and the guards were transported immaterially to the place behind the rocks, near the tower, where she talks again to the guards, before everyone goes fighting the dragon.

I explored the mods I'm using, most of them made by me, the others are listed in my profile, none of them modify mq104, so, the only thing remaining was the cleaned esms. I restored the original esms by doing a "verify cache" in Steam, loaded a save made before the player gives the dragonstone to Farengar and now the missing scene plays normally!

I know what you're thinking: she's so stupid that she's not able to follow simple instructions and she screwed her game! Well, sorry to disappoint you, but, no, I'm not that stupid and I did the cleaning properly.

I report this because I think it's important; it's up to everyone to decide what they want to do.

Not sure how that could possibly have any effect on things. The DLCs don't touch that quest or the scenes in it, or Irileth either. Plus I've been playing with them cleaned all along and have done that particular quest a number of times and the gate scene plays out perfectly every time.

You make no mention of using the unofficial patches, you should probably try that with those installed and see if it helps. I know we've got some stuff in there that has to do with that scene in particular but can't think of it off hand.

I just went through Dragon Rising at least ten times (yes !) this week and each time I got the scene where Irileth gave her speech to the guards near the gate. Flawlessly. My master files are cleaned following alt3rn1ty's instructions here and of course I'm using the latest Unofficial patches.

Your problem has another cause, ladyonthemoon.

Yep, also using Unofficial Patch Project, I always clean master files - And never had a problem with the gate scene

( well apart from my impatience, having seen that scene so many times .. I just want to get on with it instead of hanging around for the rousing speech to complete :D )

  • 1 month later...

Edit : Amended the OP - Dragonborn.esm 68 ITMs

Thank you. Since there were 4 more ITMs, the following line about UDRs should mention 214318 processed records instead of 214322, as acknowledged by TES5Edit.

  • 3 weeks later...

TES5Edit 3.1.2 just deleted 100 ITMs in update.esm for me.

edit: link to the list of which esms to load when automatically cleaning official master files is non functional, since wrinklyninja removed those entries.

edit 2: 631 itms in dawnguard (6 in second cleaning)

219 in hearthfires

116 in Dragonborn

that is after i did a fresh cache validation from steam. did i bork something up or is the guide just a bit outdated?

The last time I did this cleaning was three weeks ago, on November, 10, and the numbers in this guide were perfectly accurate.

Hm, odd. I'll need to double check which version of xedit i have installed. Maybe i did switch to a development release version.

Edit: Last version of tes5edit was released on nov. 10th. Had you already downloaded that one?

I always used the development versions released here at afkmods. And yes, on November 10 I was using the version released here the previous day which is, as far as I know, the same that the one released on Nexus : http://www.afkmods.com/index.php?/topic/3750-wipz-tes5edit/?p=157876

ok, the issue seems to be on my end. on another computer with a freshly installed skyrim and the exact same xedit files, i get the cleaning as described in the guide. not sure what is up with the other computer, need to investigate.

:) I have done exactly the same thing before, with Oblivion master files and Skyrim. Thought I had followed a cleaning routine exactly as instructed, and came out with different results. In that case I think I had failed to paste in an original esm before loading or .. something .. which did not make sense either because xEdit is always 100% consistant in the records it cleans.

Over on TESAlliance I made this guide available there too, and LadyOnTheMoon had a similar experience, but after giving me the benefit of the doubt she went through doing them again and results matched the guide ..

.. No clue what step of the guide is causing people to communially share similar fubars' - Maybe I have a part of the description makes everyone have tired moments, "Cheers Alt, your guide was so enthralling we all fell asleep reading it"  :coffee:

These days I make a Wrye Bash BAIN which has fresh original masters in one set of sub-package choices, and further choices of completed stages of cleaning for each plugin, so that I can anneal the installation with any stage and redo should I ever need to ..

Rare occasion these days just to check out newer versions of xEdit and see if there are more advancements in cleaning to be gained for any particular stage - None recently, but I am not using any of the newer Fallout 4 compatible early versions yet, basicly because I dont think there has been any more work done which would affect the results for Skyrim plugins in those.

If anyone tries the new Fallout 4 versions, and renames it to TES5Edit.exe to try on Skyrim there is a possibility that something new could be uncovered sometime later in the future, but right now I am trusting only to the results of the official Skyrim 3.1.2 released version for this guide, because the newer betas are so early in development. Although I cant see the FO4 module of xEdit affecting the TES5Edit mode of operation.

I've had an issue with cleaning the DLC and Update, I followed the guide exactly, and I am no stranger to xEdit (I have thousands of hours using it) so I don't think I've made any mistake doing such a simple thing and I did it twice just to make sure. However I get a few broken areas as if the ONAM's corresponding to the ITM's are not being removed, I don't know if this is a bug in xEdit or what. I am using the latest stable TES5Edit release for Skyrim (3.1.2). Here is example pictures which are taken from near the lake on the road to Falkreath.

Has anyone else had this issue before?

Do you have a more precise location for that? I can't recall seeing any problems along the lake, but the last time I cleaned the DLC was months and months ago.

00009BB5 POIPineForest24 <-3,-16>

Dawnguard is overriding the Landscape there, and SLEP is overriding some tree's and other statics. The issue extends into the next cell to the east.

Not sure what the deal is then. I just checked on a copy with the DLC cleaned with 3.1.2 and then the remaining manual cleanings afterward. 00009BB5 isn't giving me any problems like that. Either in my USLEEP only folder or in my regular play folder.

I am not sure either, I have played in middle of 2013 with cleaned files and never had an issue with Skyrim. There is literally nothing else touching these cells, it seems rather odd and I'd like to get to the bottom of it.

The only thing that springs to mind is an old Oblivion bug where Havok enabled items that originate in one cell roll off into another and cause the engine to think a cell of landscape is loaded when it's not. Bizarre stuff, but I would have figured this would show up again in other games if they never fixed it.

If it's not that old bug returning from the grave, I have no idea what else it could be. All of the ONAM data is correct in the cleaned copies of the DLCs.

For anyone else curious - Stand at the following map location ( centre of the map here )

http://srmap.uesp.net/?locx=-11133&locy=-63874&zoom=17&showcells=true

And look South South East ( SSE ) ( your back towards the tree on the shore of Lake Illinata )

At this point I don't think the ITM's are going to cause any problems, and I can fix the ENCZ in my patch when I make it. Thanks for checking it out, maybe I'll figure out why this is happening for me later. For now I'm going to chalk it up to a random bug related to my system or setup.

May I request MD5 hashes for the cleaned files?

Thank you both, I can verify that my cleaned files match the crc/md5 hashes. What that means... a mystery.

It means you started with exactly the same masters version we did, you followed the cleaning exactly as we did, and you have resulting files exactly the same as we have .. Byte for byte perfect match throughout the plugin, otherwise you would not have the same CRC or MD5 for the resulting cleaned plugins.

So whatever your problem is does not lie with the Masters, or the cleaning guide.
