Cleaning mods - Questions and Answers

I'm just about to clean Hearthfire.esm in TES5Edit, but I don't remember the last time I clean most of those mods I've installed and I forgot how to do it in TES5Edit.  There is one thing I do remember and that's I need to apply cleaning filter before the actual cleaning process begins which I did in TES5Edit, but now I'm not sure what to do next so that's why I ask here.

I need to clean Hearthfire.esm plus fix my loadorder, gamesave, install mods/patches or uninstall Hearthfire incompatible mods, and make sure that there is no issues before Dragonborn is released the 5th of February.

I also think that most people would appreciate if someone could post a mod cleaning tutorial for TES5Edit here or if it has the same procedure as TES4Edit then just ignore this.

I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as TES4Edit cleaning... apply filter - remove ITM's, UDR's. :)

It wouldn't hurt to have the tutorial here though.

Thanks Hana.

I agree especially when there is a difference between these games.

I've a vague memory about cleaning Update.esm every time it's updated and not only a new game patch is out, but also every DLC that are either released or updated.  Is that correct?

The DLC's are never updated so just one cleaning will do, but yes, you are correct to clean Update.esm after each update.

I do, of course, defer to the wisdom of lizards if I am wrong.

Just finish the apply cleaning filter in TES5Edit for Update.esm before the actual cleaning begins when I notice these warnings about unused data in Skyrim.esm for something I haven't seen before.

I see.  Good.

I also check all 3 DLC, but only Dragonborn didn't have the debug messages.  Why Dragonborn?

Updates to the CK perhaps? Who knows. Their data formats are not particularly stable.

I think you know more than you realise. because you mention about the latest *major* CK update here or here.

That doesn't exactly tell us what minor things might have changed in record stuff between when Skyrim.esm was created and when Dragonborn.esm was created.

Okay I continue to clean Update.esm, but when it was time for Hearthfires.esm to get cleaned I got this message.

I didn't want to remove the other lines above the last two lines.  Are the last two lines normal or is it something else to be careful about?

Cleaning Dragonborn.esm also gave me a similar message.

Undeleting is fine, you want it to do that. It will help reduce CTDs from mods which might have later edited those same things.

The deleted navmeshes are another story. Nothing can be done about those right now so you'll need to keep that in mind.

Thanks for clarification. :)

All I did was to remove ITM, UDR and as long I do that it should be safe to do so unless the author stated otherwise.  Correct?

I went on to install the rest of the mods I wanted to use, but when I ran BOSS three mods was found that needs cleaning and one of them was TK's Freedom of Speech.

Now I don't know if that's intentional or not, but it had 17 ITM, 0 UDR.  So I guess that it would be safe to clean it or is it unsafe to do further cleaning.

Correct, that's all you need to do.

Yes, it's safe to clean. Chances are you're using a newer version of TES5Edit than he was.

Thanks. :)  Just what I needed to know.

I'm using the latest TES5Edit 3.0.29 a least what I notice when I downloaded it from Nexus.

Actually they're up to 3.0.30 now which is going to pick up even more ITMs. Might want to upgrade before you get too far along :)

Just updated TES5Edit and ran BOSS again, but TK's Freedom of Speech are still detected as dirty by BOSS and not by TES5Edit 3.0.30.  Why is that different between these two tools for the same mod?

I'm using TES5Edit 3.0.31 Experimental and today I ran BOSS then TES5Edit to clean the normal mods (Update.esm, HearthFires.esm, Dragonborn.esm), but after I cleaned HearthFires.esm I notice something odd because BOSS reporting 184 ITM and only 180 ITM was removed in TES5Edit.  Why is that?  Have TES5Edit been improved and be able to skip 4 ITM when cleaning HearthFires.esm?
