how to mark mods as esls

It's really quite simple. I use the Creation Kit to make my mods Light Masters. There are two options under the File Dropdown Menu (image below), - Compact Active File Form IDs: this compacts (burps) the file IDs in the active mod, making the mod smaller and conserving space. Doing this is recommended for every mod, just to decease its footprint. - Convert Active File to Light Master: This will validate the current file and if possible, create a Light Master (*.esl) file. I assume (knowing full well what "assume" does) that if one wants to convert someone else's mod to an *.esl file, you simple stop here. For my own files; having completed the above two steps in order, I close the CK, relaunch the CK and then open the *.esl file as input. Then, I simply use the Upload Plugin and Archive to Creations > PC (greyed out below) to create the mod package on Bethesda's website. Once that is done, I collect the pieces the process created (*.bsa files and *.esl file), stick them in a *.7z file and upload it to AFK Mods. The upside; this process is identical for Fallout 4. Now, for the caveat. This process is for MY mods, and not someone else's. If you want to convert someone else's mod to an *.esl, there is also a process using xEdit which I am unfamiliar with, as I do not normally muck about with other mod makers mods. This process is documented in Nexusmods. My only piece of advice is to make damned sure you know what the mod and all it's pieces are about before undertaking this course. I hope this is helpful.

    GoG offline installation files

Nice to know. Thanks for the explanation. This would probably be the way for me to go rather than making a backup copy of the entire folders for Steam games, since it compresses the files a bit. My external drive, where I backup my files, is getting closer to running out of space, and I would rather not have to buy another one any sooner than necessary.

It backs up the files you already have on your computer and the backups are compressed so they're a bit better for storing. I also have bandwidth issues so I feel your pain.

Interesting. Maybe I'm thinking of Origin and/or Epic Games refusing to recognize the files when I did it that way. I'll have to try it out in Steam again on a game that doesn't have a very big download and see what happens. It could also be that some registry entries related to the game were corrupted or deleted somehow (like when doing a fresh Windows installation), and that confused the Steam client. Edit: @Arthmoor You were right; that still works. Steam only verified the game files to make sure they were correct. The verification process took 2-3 minutes. Assuming the internet data usage feature in Windows is accurate, Steam only used around 50MB during the process. The game I tested this method on would have been a 7.7GB download. The same process also works with GoG Galaxy, so that means there's no need to download the offline files. Hopefully this won't be changed on GoG or Steam because not everybody has unlimited data usage with their internet plan.

Unless something has changed recently, it should be possible to copy the files back into the game folder under Steam and then tell Steam to install the game. It's supposed to skip over the parts you already have and only reacquire the ones that you don't have or that are outdated. So it would be something you'd need to keep up on each time the game updates. The last time I had to reinstall things I did exactly this. I've never used the built in backup function in the Steam client.
  12. Okay, so I wanted to make a mod that adjusts the values of various items for Oblivion, but when I try to save it, Wyre Bash says it's corrupted. I have Windows 10, eveything else wroks fine, game runs fine, ETC, its' just the dang editor. I'm sure the answer is super obvious, knowing me, I'm a bit of a grandpa when it comes to this kind of stuff. I do know that the reason for the error is: REC_HEADER: Attempted to read past (20) end (0) of file/buffer. Anybody know how to fix this?

I guess not. Apparently what you're describing is a special feature in Steam, which I wasn't aware of. What I did was copy the game installation directory to another location on my PC using Windows. Then when I wanted to reinstall copy it back to the Steam directory. This worked at some point in the past, but then it suddenly didn't anymore. Does the process you're describing consume internet bandwidth, or does it just copy your existing installation to a backup location? I would have to plan accordingly if it does actually download the backup files from the internet instead of simply transferring files already on my PC.
  14. Which city is this in? It's possible I've missed a marker for the Fishing quest.

Great! Boxes with all glass around could be placed in the room and those with a solid back could be placed at the walls. I will look into creating a separate texture for the standard bottom of the display cases, just to get more acquainted with NifSkope, as this has also been done with the glass. Edit: Already quit trying to look into a separate texture for the bottom. Bad eye-hand coordination!! I'm getting too old for this shit!

While I am separating the raised bottom, I may as well start on the other variants. I see a need for a choice of transparent or solid back, a choice of three positions for the hinge (current whole box hinged at base rear - front panel hinged at top - top panel hinged at rear). The solid back would have a wood texture on the outside, and a replaceable one on the inside, so it could hold a background image, or match the inside floor. Maybe a vertical orientation, with a front opening panel hinged like a door. That is, two units high on a one unit square base. Same solid or transparent back options. Default textures would all use the existing one, so you would only need additional dds files to change the interior surfaces.

Sounds very peculiar. Please, can you say what mod is was? I want to check out the solution.

Are you using the feature properly? You have to use the Restore Game Backup option from the menu, not the Install button on the game page. I've found it installs the game just fine from the backup and only downloads updates.
  20. So strange issue -- I have an NPC who is showing on the map as a quest location, but she's showing a -3402.89+ z-position in More Informative Console and is "invisible" in the city. Tried using tcl to see if I could see her, but she seems to be located right where she should be in the city in game, just not visible and cannot interact. Checked xEdit and her z position is normal, so the -3402.89 is only showing in game. I'm using Open Cities 3.1.12, but I've seen her before in the city, but I'm turning in the quest for Two of a Kind and wondering if OCS and the quest are interacting. Just wondering if anyone else has come across the issue.

It is working for me without any problem. Could you make the raised bottom a different BSTriNode? I had to lower the large box beneath a white marble pedestal, to make certain items better visible. If it is a separate BSTriNode, I could give it any texture that suits the objects I place in the display box (version 3b). If necessary I could write instructions how to use the resources (maybe in a PDF with images).

I admit I was expecting more issues. I usually have more problems with delivering stuff than producing it. This will probably get made into a simple resource mod, so it will need a readme with foolproof instructions on how to use it. Why do I think that part is going to be even harder?

I've replaced the file again. This version has three nif's - flat with raised bottom, opening - box style opening, - and box, static. There's also am esp that places them in WarehouseCrafting, to test that they work. I'm still playing with the idea of one glass panel opening, and that could be top or front, by the time I'm done.

    GoG offline installation files

You're probably correct. I was looking through a couple of my other games and they do have some type of offline patch installers. SSE, for instance, has a single file that updates the game to the latest version (screenshot). Stardew Valley has several of them (screenshot). FO4, however, doesn't have any yet (screenshot), for reasons I don't understand. What annoys me about Steam is that it appears to make you download everything again when you want to reinstall a game, regardless of whether you have a backup of the game files stored on your PC. I'm certain that this is the case with other clients like Origin and Epic Games. Hopefully GoG Galaxy won't be the same way, because I've deliberately stopped using Steam and other game clients for games that are also available on GoG. Yeah, I was going to wait but noticed that I happened to have ~200 GB of bandwidth remaining a few days before the monthly payment period ended on the 20th. I guess it's not the end of the world if I have redownload the whole thing again at some point. What really eats into my bandwidth limit are games that are ~50 GB or more. Fallout 4 GOTY is currently 32 GB for the game itself and 58 GB for the High Resolution pack. Hopefully the High Resolution pack won't get an update and it's only the main game file, but I'm not counting on that being the case. I have another game on GoG that is ~150 GB altogether between the base game and DLC, and that's a real killer. From what I've read it's 24-48 hours (on average) for the offline packages to get sorted out after a game updates, though some people claim it can take a week or more. I haven't actually kept track, so who knows what is actually true.

No problem. I'm glad someone is helping me out with this. I have a lot to do for my personal museum. Thanks for all your hard work!
